Grant Township Approves New Campground Development at Winston Speedway

ROTHBURY, MI — The Grant Township Board has officially approved plans for a 25-site campground at Winston Speedway, marking another major step forward in the revitalization of the historic racing facility.

The project is part of ongoing redevelopment efforts led by track owners Andrew and John Heykoop, who have been working to expand the speedway into a multi-use destination for racing fans, outdoor enthusiasts, and event attendees.

Andrew Heykoop said the township’s approval represents a significant milestone in the speedway’s long-term growth strategy.

“We are extremely grateful to Grant Township for working with us and supporting responsible development,” Heykoop said. “I’m super excited to see new projects moving forward at the track. The campground is going to add a whole new experience for fans and visitors coming to Winston Speedway.”

Enhancing the Race-Day Experience
The proposed campground will feature 25 designated campsites designed to accommodate race fans, event guests, and travelers visiting the Rothbury area. The development is intended to provide convenient on-site lodging, allowing visitors to stay closer to racing events and other entertainment activities planned at the speedway.

Owners say the campground will be designed with safety, accessibility, and comfort in mind, while maintaining the rural character that has long defined the Winston Speedway property.

John Heykoop emphasized that the project is about creating a destination that encourages visitors to stay longer and engage more deeply with local events.
“We want Winston Speedway to be more than just a place people come for a few hours,” he said. “The campground helps turn race weekends and events into full experiences for families and visitors.”

Economic Boost for the Area
Local officials and community members have expressed optimism that the campground will generate additional tourism and economic activity for Rothbury and surrounding communities. Speedway officials believe extended visitor stays will help support local restaurants, gas stations, retail businesses, and nearby attractions.

The campground is expected to complement other planned upgrades and programming at Winston Speedway, which the Heykoop family has been working to restore and modernize since acquiring the facility.

Continued Investment in the Speedway’s Future
The Heykoops have described the campground as one piece of a larger redevelopment vision that includes facility improvements, expanded entertainment programming, and increased community engagement opportunities.

Andrew Heykoop said the speedway’s future depends on creating a welcoming and memorable experience for guests.

“We’re investing in Winston Speedway because we believe in what it means to this community,” he said. “Every new project brings us closer to building something that families, racers, and fans can be proud of.”
Construction timelines and campground availability dates are expected to be announced following final planning and site preparation phases. Speedway officials say updates will be shared with the public as development progresses.
