Winston Speedway in Rothbury Set for Revival Under New Ownership
ROTHBURY, MI — A historic West Michigan motorsports venue is getting a second chance at life. Winston Speedway in Rothbury has officially been purchased by Shelby business owners Andrew and John Heykoop, marking the beginning of an ambitious plan to restore, redevelop, and reintroduce the beloved dirt track to the racing community.
The Heykoop family, long recognized for their business leadership and community involvement in Oceana County, announced the purchase with a commitment to preserving the track’s heritage while modernizing it for future generations of racers and fans.
Andrew Heykoop, who will help lead the redevelopment efforts alongside his father John, expressed strong enthusiasm about the acquisition.
“Winston Speedway holds a lot of memories for people across West Michigan,” said Andrew Heykoop. “We are incredibly excited and honored to bring Winston Speedway back to life. Our goal is to restore it as a premier destination for grassroots racing, family entertainment, and community events.”
A Legacy Track with Deep Local Roots
Winston Speedway has long been a staple of the local racing scene, attracting drivers and fans from throughout Michigan and surrounding states. Known for its fast dirt oval and loyal fanbase, the speedway historically served as a gathering place for families, racing teams, and motorsports enthusiasts.
The Heykoops say preserving that legacy is central to their vision.
John Heykoop, a longtime Shelby business owner, emphasized the importance of community involvement in the track’s revival.
“This isn’t just about racing,” John said. “It’s about rebuilding something that belongs to the community. We want Winston Speedway to be a place where families can come together, local drivers can compete, and local businesses can thrive.”
Plans for Restoration and Expansion
Initial plans for the speedway include infrastructure improvements, facility upgrades, and the return of weekly racing programs. The new ownership group also plans to explore expanded uses for the property, including special events, concerts, and camping accommodations to enhance the overall visitor experience.
Andrew Heykoop noted that the redevelopment will focus heavily on safety, fan engagement, and competitor experience.
“We want racers to be proud to compete here and fans to be proud to call Winston their home track,” Andrew said. “We’re going to invest in the facility, build strong partnerships, and create events that people will travel to see.”
Economic and Community Impact
